It varies by appointment type. If it is a wellness visit as a healthy pet, it may take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete the routine service such as vaccines, fecal or heartworm test, dental checkups, etc.
If the pet needs the illness-related examination, it may last average 60 minutes or longer, pending blood test, x-rays with sedation shot and its reversal, and the treatment accordingly.
Prior to the examination, we may try to collect the fecal or urine specimen onsite. Sometimes we may try to harvest a fresh fecal specimen directly from the rectum at examination. We may attempt to gently massage out the urine sample as a free catch specimen. We may peform a bladder tap during exam if indicated.
Most blood tests and x-rays require no food for 12 hours, but water is allowed. For x-rays, we may sedate the pet with a tranquilizer shot, then reverse the tranquilization thereafter. If necessary, we may pre-medicate the pet with oral sedative pills. These sedative pills are to be given 2 to 3 hours in a small pill-pocket made of chicken or other protein on empty stomach before a visit.
